Defender speaks following award success...
ACADEMY duo Tom Edwards and Lewis Banks conveyed their delight after claiming the 2016/17 Under-18 and Under-23 Player of the Year awards yesterday evening.
Edwards picked up the Under-18 gong for the second consecutive season after shining for Kevin Russell’s side as they reached the Semi-Finals of the FA Youth Cup, while Banks captained the Under-23s to the Staffordshire Senior Cup title last month.
The pair, who both hail from Staffordshire, were visibly pleased with their triumph and Edwards began by stating that he hopes to continue his progression with as he looks to fulfil long-term targets.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Edwards expressed. “I won it last year and I’ve just tried to kick on again.
“I started out this season with the Under-18s and we reached the Semi-Finals of the FA Youth Cup which was the Club’s best run for 30 years and then I’ve been playing quite a lot for the Under-23s.
“I’ve also experienced training with the first team and made it on to the bench against Everton which was probably the best moment of my career so far.
“I know that I mustn’t stop the hard work though and I need to keep improving because I haven’t got to where I want to be yet.
Meanwhile, Banks added: “Obviously it’s been a good season for me having picked up the Staffordshire Senior Cup and this award just tops off it nicely.
“I always try to be professional around the building and look after the boys but at the same time if people are not doing their jobs I do tell them as well.
“Tom and I are good mates and we have a bit of banter about being local lads so to win an award alongside him feels good.”
