City boss delighted with first Premier League victory over United...

MARK HUGHES had every reason to feel satisfied after his Stoke City side secured their first ever Premier League victory over Manchester United.

The Potters put the disappointment of recent results firmly behind them as they ended their 30-year wait for a league win over United.

Charlie Adam scored on either side of a Robin van Persie strike to secure a historic victory that lifted City to 11th in the Premier League table.

City took the lead thanks to deflected Adam strike but there was no doubting the quality of the Scottish international’s stunning match winner.

“It’s a huge result for us,” Hughes told “Given that we put in a huge effort against Sunderland on Wednesday for no reward unfortunately, there was a worry that it might have had an effect against one of the top teams in the country.

“It did to a certain extent but I felt the lads weren’t ever going to feel sorry for themselves. They knew what effort they had to put into the game and I thought it was a magnificent performance.

“We had a little bit of luck with the first goal but we haven’t had too much of that in recent weeks and then we had the disappointment of losing the equaliser.

“But we picked ourselves up again and the goal that won it was an absolutely outstanding strike from Charlie. We’re not surprised when he gets in those positions that he has the capacity to score fantastic goals from those distances. It was a great goal to win a great game from our point of view.”

United included new £37.1million signing Juan Mata in their line-up alongside van Persie and Wayne Rooney for the first time but City refused to be fazed by their opponent’s abundance of riches.

“That was probably United’s strongest side but we weren’t ever going to show apprehension once the team sheets were put in,” Hughes added. “We knew they would bring in those players and they would have an effect on the game, which they did to a certain part.

“But the threat of United was limited due to efforts we showed. It was important win for us; at the start of proceedings I think we were in 18th position and we ended up 11th, so that tells you how crazy the league is at the moment.”
