Stoke number one also admits a Potters clean sheet was just around the corner...

GOALKEEPER Asmir Begovic was pleased to keep a clean sheet in last weekend’s Barclays Premier League win over Arsenal at the Britannia Stadium.

The Bosnian international helped the Potters record their first shutout in fifteen games in all competitions, a feat that dates back to early December following a goalless draw away at Hull City.

Despite being proud of the clean sheet, Begovic praised the performance of his teammates as the Potters held on for victory, after a second-half Jonathan Walters penalty.

“It was a huge win for us and it was a fantastic performance against a big team” he said exclusively to Stoke City Player.

“It’s always great to get a clean sheet. I feel that one has been coming for a while, but we just haven’t had the luck that we would have wanted in recent weeks.

“Our defensive organisation and performances have been more than okay, but we just haven’t quite been able to get that clean sheet until now.

“It was a fantastic performance, we really stuck together and we were able to get the clean sheet and the win” he added.

“The commitment from the team was great and it’s great to see the guys throwing their bodies on the line for the good of the team.

“It’s nice to perform well and get results against teams like Arsenal and hopefully it will set us up nicely for the rest of the season.

“As I say, it’s nice to not concede, but the most important thing is that we picked up a crucial three points.”

The 26-year-old has started the last six games since returning from a broken finger and revealed he has fully recovered from the injury he sustained in late December.

“My finger is feeling great and I don’t have to wear any support braces.

“It was frustrating to be out, but thankfully there’s no pain, and everything feels comfortable now.

“I must admit, it’s nice to have the feeling back in my hand again and it’s getting better all the time.”

The goalkeeper is on international duty this week with Bosnia & Herzegovina, who are preparing for this summer’s World Cup Finals with a friendly against Egypt, and Begovic admits he is relishing the chance to play in his country’s first ever major tournament but insists he remains fully focused on Stoke’s remaining ten games of the season.

“I can’t get away from thinking about the World Cup, people keep reminding me about it” he joked.

“Of course I’m looking forward to it, it’s a dream of mine to play in a major tournament with my country, but right now I can’t think about the summer as there are plenty more games left of this season.

“Right now I am fully concentrating on Stoke, it's important we kick on from the result against Arsenal and finish as high as possible in the table at the end of the season.”
