STOKE CITY’S Under 21 and Under 18 sides both recorded victories in their inaugural pre-season friendlies on Wednesday.
Glyn Hodges Under 21s were 3-1 victors against Conwy Borough in North Wales last night, whilst the Under 18s recorded an emphatic 5-1 win against their lower league counterparts York City at the Clayton Wood Training Ground earlier in the day.
The success for the 21s represents a winning start for the recently appointed manager Hodges, who oversaw an impressive performance from his side who secured the win thanks to strikes from Jack Nardiello, James Alabi and Swedish trialist Victor Soderstrom.
Meanwhile, John Perkins' Under 18 side put York City to the sword in temperatures that hit the heights of 27 degrees at the Potters' training base.
Speaking to stokecityfc.com following the encounter, Perkins revealed that he took far greater satisfaction from the attitude and work ethic of the players, rather than the impressive winning margin.
“It was a really good workout for us in very hot temperatures, and whilst the result gives the lads confidence that wasn’t the most important factor of the game for us,” he said.
“Obviously, at this time of the year it’s all about building the fitness levels up of the lads and getting them ready for the start of the new season.
“I thought we started off relatively slowly, but the first 30 minutes of the second half really was exceptional – and there were a lot of positives to take from that.”
He added: “All of the lads, particularly the younger ones who played in the second half showed a tremendous attitude and played some good stuff.
“It certainly gives us a good platform to build upon as we take things up a gear in training, and look towards our next friendly.”
