England striker aiming to finish season with a flourish

PETER CROUCH is targeting an improved goalscoring return over the course of the next few months . . . as he and his Stoke City teammates look to fire their way back into the top ten of the Barclays Premier League.

A barren run of form, which has culminated in just a single victory in eleven games, has left the Potters nervously looking over their shoulders; threatening their hopes of breaking into the top-half of the League table for the first time.

England ace Crouch however believes the side are more than capable of turning things back around, and has highlighted the importance of hitting the back of the net on a more regular basis over the final eight games of the season.

“From a personal point of view, I should be scoring more goals; I know that, but we also know that as a team we need to be scoring more goals,” he acknowledged.

“We are going through a tough spell at the moment, whereby chances aren’t really being created thick and fast, so it isn’t easy.

“You just have to keep going though, and keep waiting for those breaks to come. Apart from the lack of goals, I don’t think I have done too badly, but as a striker, you are obviously judged upon the amount of goals you score.

“I certainly have confidence in my own ability, and I’m sure it won’t be long until things are back on the right track again.”

Last season’s Player of the Year believes the signs have been there to suggest that an upturn in fortunes may just be around the corner.

“We need to win a game,” he enthused. “We have actually played well, especially in the game at Newcastle, which really hurt us.

“I do think that we deserved to win that game, let alone pick up a point. That was a real cruel blow to us.

“There have been a few games recently where we probably deserved more than we got, but for whatever reason we were left disappointed.”

He added: “We are still looking at the top-ten though, and I do honestly believe that a finish in a top-half position is achievable; despite the sticky spell we are going through.”
