Winger in line to return for big game against Norwich

MATTHEW ETHERINGTON could feature in Stoke City’s bid to reach the all-important 40-mark when they face Norwich City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.

The experienced winger, who scored the winning goal in the same fixture last season, has been given a good chance of a return at the weekend by manager Tony Pulis.

Etherington has been struggling to shrug off a niggling back problem which he aggravated in the first half of the home game against Aston Villa earlier this month.

But Pulis revealed in his pre-match press conference: “There’s a good chance Matty will be fit because he has trained really well today which is encouraging.

“He’s had some injections in his back over the past couple of weeks which seem to have cleared the problem, so it is a big boost to have him back in contention.

“Whether we take a chance on him to start or not, we’ll have to wait and see. It gives me a selection headache after last week’s win, but it’s a nice one to have.”

While Etherington could return to the side, Pulis was less optimistic about the prospects of Marc Wilson recovering from a hamstring strain in time for the game.

The Republic of Ireland international aggravated the problem when making a crucial interception on Loic Remy midway through the second half of the Loftus Road win.

“I think Saturday will come too soon for Marc, although we’ll leave a decision until the last minute to give him every chance of making it,” added City’s manager.

Pulis also revealed that he will have to check on ankle problems which midfielder Charlie Adam and striker Cameron Jerome have been nursing this week.
