Under-11s triumph at tournament in Birmingham

STOKE CITY’s Under-11s showed that the future could be bright for the Potters… after coming out on top at a regional 'futsal' tournament at the Birmingham LG Arena on Sunday.

The group triumphed convincingly in all of their matches to top the league with a 100% record, including a 10-0 rout of Reading and a 5-1 thrashing of Staffordshire rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In the other matches, they beat Aston Villa 7-2, Bristol City 8-1 and Swansea City 6-3.

Their success was all the more rewarding given the fact that all of the youngsters are based within an hour of the Club, while the majority have been plucked from the Stoke-on-Trent area specifically.

The Club’s Under-12 age group were also at the event, and finished mid-table in their national league section after winning one, drawing one and losing three of their five games.

Academy Manager Dave Wright said: “It’s great for the lads to have some tournament experience - that can be a really big part of their development.

“Futsal is focussed on developing a player’s technique and skill, which ties in nice with the Coerver coaching programmes that are been implemented at the Academy.”

The game, which is played indoors on a smaller pitch and with a heavier ball, originated in South America and is integral part of the ever-growing desire for technique-based coaching in football.
