Adidas crowned champions at Official SCFC Golf Day

THE Official Stoke City Golf Day proved to be yet another roaring success . . . when Wychwood Park’s European PGA Tour standard championship course hosted the Club’s latest event on Wednesday.

A number of first-team stars took part in the day, including skipper Ryan Shawcross, England striker Peter Crouch and wingers Matthew Etherington and Michael Kightly.

Assistant Manager Dave Kemp and Coach Mark O’Connor also took to the impressive course to display their golfing credentials; however, it was shirt manufacturer Adidas who were celebrating victory
on two-fronts, come the end of a blisteringly cold day.

Early rain had looked to dampen the spirits of the near 100 competitors representing the 24 separate teams; but despite that threat, the weather remained dry throughout proceedings.

Adidas’ four-man team ultimately the winner’s trophy for a second successive year, marginally holding off a strong and spirited challenge from Stoke Mercedes-Benz, who had led right up until the final
hole.

Adidas’ Paul Slattery also scooped the accolade as the Best Individual, having chalked up a thoroughly deserving winning total of 38 stableford points – two more than Total Motion’s Richard Taylor,
who came in second place.

The other individual prizes went to Neil Wain of Solar Plumbing and Gas for the shot Nearest The Pin and 17-year-old Liam Hancock from H.Brown and Sons for the Longest Drive.

The prizes were presented to the winners by Etherington, Kightly and Crouch, all of whom spoke incredibly highly of the event.

“It’s been a great day,” Crouch, who plays off a handicap of 19, said: “The golf wasn’t the best for me personally, but we all had a good time, and it’s good to see the winners coming up to receive their
prizes.”

Former England Under 21-international Kightly added: “It’s been enjoyable, and thankfully the weather held off for us all. The guys here at Wychwood have looked after us incredibly well, and I look forward to coming back here again.”
