Mark Hughes marvels at 4-1 triumph at Villa Park

Mark Hughes hailed his side’s 4-1 away victory to Aston Villa as one of the best performances he has witnessed by the Potters this season.

Goals from Peter Odemwingie, Peter Crouch, Steven Nzonzi and Geoff Cameron secured City back-to-back victories for the second time this campaign and also a league double over their midlands rivals.

The 50-year-old told Stoke City Player that he was delighted with the result which lifted the Club back into the top half of the Premier League.

“We had a good performance the last time we won away from home a long time ago in August and this performance was certainly on par with anything we have produced home or away this season because of the manner of the result and the margin of victory,” he smiled.

“We’ve come to Villa and conceded earlier which we were disappointed about, but that really kicked us into gear to be perfectly honest and from that point onwards we showed purpose and determination to get something out of the game.

“In my view we controlled the game from start to finish and had a real cutting edge today which has held us back in certain games this season.

“When you have that at Premier League level then you can put in good performances and I thought we were fantastic from back to front.

“I think we understood exactly what we needed to do and exploited the areas which we talked about before the game.

“We knew that if we got good possession in the middle of the park and changed the play quickly then we would get opportunities in good areas and we would isolate them.

“Obviously from that point onwards you want people to pick the right pass and take their chances which is what we did today.”
