Hughes delighted with outcome of training camp trip

MARK HUGHES has hailed Stoke City’s five-day training camp in southern France as an enormous success that gave his players an insight into his managerial methods.

The first team squad were back at their Clayton Wood training complex today after flying back to England yesterday from the camp in Evian on the banks of Lake Geneva.

They will spend this week training in Staffordshire before jetting to America next Monday for a 10-day tour that will include three games.

Hughes, however, was keen to spend 24/7 with his players in the early stages of his first pre-season as Potters boss and feels the cross-Channel trip fitted the bill perfectly.

“It has been excellent,” he told Stoke City Player. “First and foremost, we were able to get some good quality work into the guys.

“The facilities were excellent and we had a good surface to work on, which is always important when you come to these sort of places.

“The idea of coming out here was for us to get to know the guys and also for them to understand how I work and what I’m after. They’ve got that insight now so when we get back to the training ground we’ll up to speed and will understand the demands I’ll place on them.

“They’ve been excellent in terms of their attitude to the work. A lot of it will be similar but some of it will be different to what they’ve done in the past.

“We want them to be able to grasp ideas very quickly and in fairness each and every one of them has done well in that respect.”

Hughes added: “As a staff, we’ve been really pleased with the quality we’ve seen in terms of technical ability and their attitude to work.

“I think they’ve enjoyed the work. I think if you asked most players who’ve worked with me in the past would say that on a day-to-day basis the work we give them is enjoyable and is at the right intensity.”
