Mark Hughes hails players following Fulham triumph...

MARK HUGHES harbours absolutely no worries that his players will rest on their laurels ahead of next weekend’s final game of the season against West Bromwich Albion after recording an emphatic 4-1 triumph over Fulham in Saturday’s final home game of the campaign.

The Potters recorded maximum points at the Britannia Stadium for a tenth time this term courtesy of goals from Peter Odemwingie, Marko Arnautovic, Oussama Assaidi and Jonathan Walters – and in the process secured a joint-record tally of 47 Premier League points.

Hughes insists his players’ minds won’t be deterred by their impressive performance against the Cottagers, and is backing them to remain focussed through to the conclusion of next weekend’s potentially history making encounter at the Hawthorns.

“I am delighted today, absolutely delighted to be perfectly honest with you, because it was important for us to get maximum points from this game,” the Welshman told Stoke City Player following the game.

“The three points we have secured today have taken us to 47 points for the season, which is a tremendous effort from us because it means we have equalled the highest tally ever achieved in the Premier League.

“We still have a game to spare so we have the opportunity now of accumulating points than we have done in the Premier League before, and should Newcastle not win their game, then we may even end the season in ninth.

“That would be a momentous achievement for us because there was a suggestion from some people before the season started we may even struggle; but in my view that was never a possibility because we have a group of players here who are accomplished at this level.”

He added: “The lads showed great confidence and a superb attitude today, and on another day could easily have scored another two, three or even four on top of the four that we did manage to get.

“It’s a good result and the lads deserve a lot of credit for it, but they will be back in for work on Monday and we will be making sure they are ready to go one last time next weekend and hopefully end the season in record breaking style.”
