Hughes happy to welcome Trinidad star into the fray

MARK HUGHES has revealed that Kenwyne Jones is likely to come straight into consideration for tomorrow evening’s opening pre-season friendly in America after linking up with the Potters in Houston on Tuesday.

The powerful striker arrived in Texas after Trinidad and Tobago were knocked out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup over the weekend, having been in competitive action for them over the course of the past two weeks.

Hughes admits that he is delighted to welcome Jones into his squad, and says that he has no qualms about thrusting him straight into the firing line in Wednesday night’s BBVA Dynamo Charities Cup clash.

“I’m delighted to have Kenwyne back with us now, and I am looking forward to working with him,” the City boss said at Tuesday afternoon’s pre-match press conference.

“In terms of fitness he will come here and he will hit the ground running because he has been playing competitively for a few weeks now.

“If anything he will be ahead of the other lads because of his work. The only issue is that he has been doing a lot of travelling, but we will assess him and make a decision on how long he will play for in the game.”

Jones’ arrival means that American starlet Brek Shea is the only current member of the first team squad not to have met the recently appointed manager.

“Brek’s the only one now who I haven’t had an opportunity to have met, and that is a little bit frustrating, purely from a personal point of view,” he added.

“Ideally he would have been with us and not in the United States squad so that we could get a better understanding as to how we both operate, but hopefully he will be with us soon.

“In terms of a Premier League player he is an unknown, but he definitely possesses a lot of potential, and with the right work he is a player that could have a big impact on the Premier League next season.”
