Potters finish fifth after finale defeat to Sheffield

STOKE CITY LADIES rounded off their first ever FA Women's Premier League (Northern Division) campaign with a narrow 4-3 defeat to runaway champions Sheffield.

The Potters battled back from three goals down to make it 3-2 at the break thanks to a brace from Laura Garside.

The visitors restored their two goal advantage before substitute Hannah Bailey came on and scored a fantastic goal to make it a nervy finish for the Yorkshire club at the Wellbeing Stadium in Yarnfield, Stone.

Defeat though means that the Potters finish the season in fifth place in the table having sustained a top-half position throughout the season.

Wins for clubs with games in hand, however, means they leapfrog Stoke into the higher reaches.

Preston North End beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0 on Wednesday with Bradford City thrashing Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 yesterday and those two sides now play their final game of the season on Sunday to determine who finishes runners-up behind Sheffield.

The Potters had occupied second or third for the majority of the term but manager Andrew Frost says he's still delighted with the girls after making their step up to a higher division.

"It's been a memorable season and we've had plenty of ups and downs!" he said.

"This game epitomised our season really and we showed great bouncebackability once again despite defeat.

"At the start of the season our aim was to stay in the league and it shows how far we've come as a Club to be disappointed to finish fifth.

"We've made great strides going forward for next season and improved dramatically both on the pitch and behind the scenes.

"I'd like to thank all the players for standing by each other and myself through the season, the Club for backing us like they have and to everyone that comes down to give us their valued support."

Details of upcoming trials for next season will be announced shortly; be sure to check the Ladies Twitter page @stokecitylfc.
