Potters fall 3-1 in FA Women's Cup Third Round

STOKE CITY LADIES' FA Cup dream came to an end when they were defeated 3-1 by Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena yesterday.

It was only the second time that the Potters had progressed as far as the Third Round stage but will look back on a poor start and some defensive mistakes in what was a disappointing exit for the girls.

The Sky Blues were already 3-0 up when Chantelle Gallagher struck from the penalty spot, and despite the best efforts of the visitors for the final half an hour of the game, Coventry hung on to clinch a place in the next round.

For Stoke, it was a rare disappointment in a fantastic couple of years for everyone connected to the team.

"Three mistakes cost us three goals so it is a lesson to be learned for the girls," said manager Andrew Frost.

"They were 2-0 up at half-time and we never got into the game in the first half - maybe we were a bit overwhelmed by the surroundings after all.

"We came out after the break and started brightly, but another mistake then gifted them a third and it was always going to be an uphill battle after that."

Attentions turn to another cup competition now as the Potters continue their quest to retain the Staffordshire FA County Cup with a Semi Final clash at Walsall on Sunday.
