Ladies on course to complete memorable treble

STOKE CITY Ladies have taken a big step towards completing a glorious treble . . . by lifting the Staffordshire County Cup once again.

They secured their first piece of silverware of the season when they comfortably overcame their reserve side 5-1 in the final at Norton United.

Now, they will be hoping to follow that up by clinching the Midland Combination League title at the weekend and then the League Cup next month.

City’s Ladies are eleven points clear in the League and a victory at Coventry on Sunday would be enough if other results go their way as well.

They are due to face Leafield Athletic in the League Cup Final at Stafford Rangers’ Marston Road ground on April 28th, an occasion which will be refereed by the man who took charge of the 2010 World Cup Final in South Africa, Howard Webb.

The County Cup Final was won with a brace from Becky Knight and further goals from Chantelle Gallagher, Laura Garside and Claudia Walker.

Knight scored either side of half-time to put the first team in command before Garside made it 3-0, only for Holly Fowell to pull one back for the reserves.

The triumph was then crowned by further goals from Walker and Gallagher.

Joint-manager Andrew Frost said: “Hopefully, this will be the first of three trophies. We are really pleased to have come out on top in this Final.

“When we received the team sheets before the game and saw the strength of the reserves, it made you realised just how much we have developed.”

While the Ladies face a trip to Coventry at the weekend, they are then at home to title rivals Leafield Athletic next Tuesday evening.

If they are unable to clinch the title on Sunday, then they could land trophy number two at Stone Dominoes early next week (7.45pm).
