3-2 win sets up potential treble winning season

STOKE CITY LADIES reached their second cup final of the season at the weekend ...to give them hope of clinching a unique treble.

Laura Garside's last minute winner clinched a 3-2 victory at Rotherham United to pin a League Cup Final on a calendar already containing the Staffordshire County Cup showpiece.

The Potters had been two goals up in Yorkshire after Dawn Mallett and Chantelle Gallagher had struck, before the hosts began a spirited comeback to pull the scores level.

Garside was on hand, however, to get on the end of substitute Polly Salt's right wing cross in the 90th minute and hooked the ball in to set up a tricky final against rivals Leafield Athletic.

"We didn't play as well as we expected but it still shows how strong we are as a squad where we can get a victory by not playing our best," said joint manager Andrew Frost.

"It's great to be in two finals and I'm really happy because that shows consistency in the quality of our squad; three players came on and did just as well as those who started.

"It can be difficult as teams who face us almost play like its their cup final. We're there to be shot down now and that brings big pressure but they've coped with it really well."

City have to travel to Leafield later this week for a league fixture, incidentally, with a lead of six points over their opposition at the top of the table having played two games more.

They are already guaranteed at least one part of the treble, as the first team meet the reserves for the County Cup trophy in two weeks time.
