Owen misses out on Anfield return

TONY PULIS named two former Liverpool stars in his starting line-up against the Reds at Anfield on Sunday afternoon . . . whilst one other was forced to miss out on an emotional return to his former stomping ground through injury.

Ex-Kop favourites Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam featured in Tony Pulis’ starting eleven, as the City boss stuck with the same side that recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory against Swansea eight days earlier.

Meanwhile, Michael Owen, who scored 158 goals in 297 appearances during his eight-year stay on Merseyside, wasn’t in the travelling party having sustained a knock in training during the build-up to the encounter.

Bosnian ace Asmir Begovic continued in goal, ushering a back four which consisted of the recently called up England defender Ryan Shawcross, Robert Huth, United States ace Geoff Cameron and Marc Wilson.

With Crouch spearheading the side, the midfield quintet was made up of wingers Michael Kightly and Jonathan Walters, whilst Steven N’Zonzi, Glenn Whelan and the more attacking Adam featured in the middle.

Pulis named Kenwyne Jones, Cameron Jerome, Maurice Edu, Dean Whitehead, Matthew Etherington, Matthew Upson and former Denmark skipper Thomas Sorensen amongst his substitutes.

STOKE CITY (4-5-1): Begovic; Cameron, Shawcross (c), Huth, Wilson; Walters, N'Zonzi, Adam, Whelan, Kightly; Crouch. Subs: Sorensen, Upson, Edu, Whitehead, Etherington, Jones, Jerome.

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Reina; Wisdom, Agger, Skrtel, Johnson; Sahin, Gerrard (c), Allen; Suso, Suarez, Sterling. Subs: Jones, Cole, Assaidi, Henderson, Coates, Carragher, Borini.
