Midfielder scores on full debut for Southend

MATTHEW LUND made a flying start to his loan spell at Southend United… by scoring on his full debut against Northampton Town on Saturday.

The 22-year-old equalised for the Shrimpers with a header midway through the second-half, but a late Kelvin Langmead goal ensured Aidy Boothroyd’s Town stole the three points at Roots Hall.

Midfielder Lund joined up with the League Two side on Friday after completing a one-month emergency loan deal, and is delighted to be getting some competitive action once more.

“It was great to be playing again because I haven’t played a competitive game since my last one for Bristol Rovers,” Lund told Southend’s official website after the match.

“It was a great to get the goal as well because it’s something I’ve wanted to improve in my game but obviously it’s disappointing as it didn’t earn us a point.

“I’ve only been here since Friday but already I can see that there is a real team spirit here at the Club and that can only be a good thing as we look to push for promotion and the play-off places.”

Lund’s goal should put him in contention for Wednesday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy match against Southend United, with the prospect of a visit to Wembley on the horizon for the Northern Ireland Under-21 international.

Elsewhere at the weekend, Rory Delap came on as a second-half substitute for Barnsley as they booked a daunting FA Cup quarter-final trip to Manchester City with a comfortable 3-1 win at Milton Keynes Dons.

Delap, who entered the fray in the 70th minute, was involved in a late incident that saw Dons midfielder Alan Smith sent-off for elbowing the 36-year-old in the chest.

In a day to forget for England international goalkeeper Jack Butland, he had to pick the ball out of the net four times as Birmingham City were routed at home by Watford in their Championship clash at St Andrew’s.

Butland will spend the rest of year with Lee Clark’s men before joining up with the Stoke City squad in the summer.

Maurice Edu fared better as he played 90 minutes for Bursaspor in their 3-0 win at Karabukspor, with former Potters Sanli Tuncay also featuring in that clash.
