STOKE CITY’S Capital One Cup dream is over for at least another year after reigning Premier League champions Manchester United recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory at the Britannia Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Superbly taken second half strikes from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra sent the Red Devils through to the Semi-Final of the competition, where they will join Sunderland, Manchester City and West Ham United.
The Potters huffed and puffed in a bid to upset David Moyes’ side, but you could sense that it just wasn’t going to be the hosts day when the impressive Walters volleyed wide of goal from 6-yards after being presented with a glorious opportunity of levelling matters.
The Republic of Ireland ace went equally as close with a thumping effort from 25-yards that dipped just over, but in truth United were worthy of victory, and deservedly secured their place in the last four thanks to both Young and Evra, who dispatched confidently during the second period.
The match will probably remain more memorable to Stoke supporters for the scenes during the opening 45 minutes – which culminated in referee Mark Clattenburg taking the players off the field due to the severe rainfall.
