Etherington and Wilson battling to recover from injury

TONY PULIS will check on the fitness of Matthew Etherington and Marc Wilson before finalising his plans for Sunday’s clash with Manchester United.

The pair failed to stay the distance against Aston Villa last weekend and are battling to be fit for the game against the Champions-elect at the Britannia Stadium.

Etherington succumbed to a back injury which had been troubling him ahead of the Villa encounter, while Wilson had to come off with a hamstring problem.

Manager Pulis said: “We are waiting for Matty and ‘Willo’. We were really disappointed that those two had to come off on Saturday, that didn’t help us.

“We’re waiting for them, hoping and praying that they will be available.”

Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan, who missed the Villa game with a trapped nerve in his back, has resumed training this week and is expected to be back in contention for a place.

Stoke have no other fitness issues ahead of the visit of United, who have doubts surrounding winger Ashley Young and defensive trio Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.

Young limped out of Monday’s derby defeat at the hands of Manchester City with an ankle injury after finding himself on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Pablo Zabaleta, while Vidic, Evans and Smalling all sat out the game.
