Coach preparing to run London Marathon on Sunday

MARK O’CONNOR will be aiming to strike it rich – not once, but twice – this weekend when he heads for the bright lights of London.

While Stoke City’s First Team Coach hopes to play his part in plotting the downfall of Queens Park Rangers in the Barclays Premier League match at Loftus Road on Saturday, he will then turn his attention to running the London Marathon for charity 24 hours later.

Not only will that fulfil a lifelong ambition, it will also give him the satisfaction of raising a significant amount for charity.

O’Connor is following in the footsteps of manager Tony Pulis and indeed midfielder Rory Delap who have embarked upon marathon missions to generate valuable funds for the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice in Trentham.

“I can’t think of a better cause to do it for than the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice,” he commented.

“It’s a special place run by special people, and I think that anything that we can do, being in the fortunate position that we are in, then we need to try and do.

“It’s something I have always wanted to do, and having spoken to the gaffer, who has done it twice, he kind of got my juices flowing, and made me want to give it a go.”

He added: “Hopefully, I can raise a nice amount of money for them, because I know that it is going to go to an absolutely fantastic cause.

“Being a parent myself, you do realise how lucky you are when you go to places like the Donna Louise and see the children and families there.”
