Free kick earns Potters a draw at Corby

WINGER Jermaine Pennant put the disappointment of being unable to travel to the USA with the rest of the first team squad to one side… by scoring a superb free kick in the 1-1 draw at Corby Town.

Pennant was a surprise inclusion in Dave Kevan’s Stoke City XI side against the Northamptonshire based club, having been unable to travel to the States with his team-mates due to a visa issue.

And whilst Kevan’s Under 21 squad were continuing their pre-season preparations following on from their game against Warrington Town last week, Pennant did his no harm either by returning from the training camp in Switzerland to open the scoring at Steel Park.

The 29-year-old curled in a free kick from the edge of the area on the half-hour mark, before the Blue Square Bet North side went on to level up proceedings through Ricky Miller on 77 minutes.

A draw was a good result for the side, particularly as Corby had beaten League Two neighbours Northampton Town at the weekend and were stretching an unbeaten pre-season run to five games.

Next is up in the Academy’s week long stay in Northamptonshire is tonight’s Under-18s game against the Cobblers, whilst both teams face respective Kettering Town opposition on Thursday evening.
