John Perkins reacts to Under-18s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool

JOHN PERKINS spoke of his frustration after Stoke City’s Under-18s suffered a 3-1 loss to Liverpool on Saturday morning.

The Potters squandered a number of first half chances and were ultimately made to pay by the Merseyside club at the Liverpool Academy.

It was the side’s second defeat on the bounce after falling to Aston Villa the previous weekend and Perkins says his team must start to convent their opportunities in front of goal.

"If both teams had taken their chances in the first 20 minutes then we would have been 3-1 up," Perkins revealed to

"The problem we have had all season is that little bit of quality in the final third. Sides are getting half chances, breaking on us and scoring yet when we do the same we aren't converting.

"We had six clear-cut chances against Liverpool and haven’t scored except from a set piece.

"We did the same against Villa when we attacked and at times had four on three and only scored once."

Perkins did however point out that he is being forced to field very inexperienced side at the moment due to a number of injuries in the camp.

"We had seven first year scholars playing against eight of their second years which is quite a big difference, so as long as the younger lads learn from it and try and develop then they will be ok," he said.

"We are playing with a very young side at the moment which is a crucial point to take into consideration.

"Daniel Gyollai and Charles Weston-Hayles made their first starts of the season for the Under-18s and I thought they both did well."

"Daniel pulled off a number of saves including a penalty and he had a good presence in goal. Charles worked really hard and held the ball up well for us and showed great determination and application."

The young Potters are next in action on Saturday morning when they host Blackburn Rovers at the Clayton Wood Training Ground (kick-off 11.00am).
