A selection of quotes from Mark Hughes' press conference...

on his side's recent run of form...
“We haven't allowed the season to drift to its conclusion, and we aren't going to allow that to happen. We are chasing targets that we have set ourselves, and if we can reach them then it will have been a very good season for us. Achieving one or two things that the club haven't done before would be fantastic. We won't sit here and pat ourselves on the back because we have had a good run of results because we have achieved nothing yet.”

on the quality of his squad...
“We have added a bit more quality in the final third this season. Marko has been superb for us, as was Oussama too until he picked up his injury. Obviously Peter Odemwingie has made an impact in the short time he has been here as well. You have to give a lot of credit to the lads that I inherited because they have really impressed me with their attitudes and work ethic, and of course, their obvious qualities too.”

on Stephen Ireland penning a new long-term deal...
“I have always felt that Stephen needs stability in his life and he is going to get that here now. He has a good structure around him and he has good people working with him on a daily basis. There is no doubt that he is a real outstanding talent, and there is no reason why he can't enjoy the best years of his career here with us. I am delighted to have been able to tie him down to a long-term deal.”

on media speculation surrounding a possible transfer target...
“Ivica Olic is a player that we like and one that we are pursuing. There have been one or two reports in the media saying this, that and the other, but for as long as we see the deal as one that we could complete then we will remain in the hunt for his signature. He is a quality player and somebody I have met on a few occasions, and I really like him. He has played at the top level for the duration of his career, he possesses incredible pace and he is technically very, very good. We have to give the guy time to make the decision that he feels is right. It isn’t dead in the water yet – he just needs time to make what will be a key decision for him.”

on the forthcoming game against Cardiff City...
“They will be buoyed by their recent win at Southampton and they will be determined to build upon that. They are very much involved in a relegation fight so they are desperate to register maximum points on Saturday. Back to back wins can do wonders for you, so a lot of the emphasis for them this week would be to make sure they follow up last weekend’s victory with another against ourselves. It will be important for us not to allow them to gain a foothold on the game because if they do that then we will be under pressure. We want to assert ourselves on them and try to take the game away from them. We are playing well and we are picking up points so it is a fixture we are all looking forward to.”

on the team news for the game...
Charlie had an operation earlier in the week and that went well so he will be available to us. He may look like the phantom of the opera with his mask on, but he is able to feature for us. Matty Etherington still has a problem with his back so he will be missing. Oussama Assaidi has trained today and he will travel with us, but we won't take any risks with him if we don't feel he is ready. We will look at him over the next 24 hours and then make a decision on him.
