A selection of quotes from Mark Hughes' press conference...

on last weekend’s victory against Arsenal…

“I thought we stood toe-to-toe with a side looking to win the Premier League this year and came out on top of them having been the best side on the day. The big disappointment for me is that when you look back at the game on Sunday or Monday having read and listened to the media, you would think that we won the game by kicking them off the pitch. That absolutely wasn’t the case. Anybody who was there on the day can have no complaints that the best side won the game.”

on Charlie Adam’s three-match ban…

“Nobody other than Charlie can say what his intentions were, and he has absolutely assured me that there was no intent whatsoever. It is disappointing that three other people, who weren’t there at the game, can sit down two or three days later and decide between them what my player’s intentions were. There has to be a system where these sort of instances are dealt with immediately after the game by people who were there at the stadium that day. To me it is a flawed system. I’m not saying it my idea is the answer, but I certainly don’t feel that the current system is the right one neither.”

on the possibility of tying Stephen Ireland down to a longer contract…

“Stephen is somebody that we are hoping to keep here beyond the end of this season. I have already spoken to him about that and the feedback that I have got is that he is very much open to that idea too. He is a player that I have a great fondness for, he is a very good person to have around the place and we see on a daily basis the undoubted qualities he has in his locker.”

on the difficulties facing his side tomorrow…

“It will be a tough place to go because Norwich, in my opinion, are an accomplished Premier League side. Maybe one or two people down there have been a little disgruntled because they maybe haven’t enjoyed the season that they were hoping for having spent a significant amount of money in the summer. On paper they have a very good squad of players, and we know that it will be a difficult afternoon for us. If we can play to the levels we have done recently however, then there is no reason why we can’t get the victory.”

on his side’s long wait for a second Premier League away triumph…

“It is something that we are desperate to address. It has been a long time since that game at West Ham United, and I think it is fair to say that picking up points on our travels has been difficult for us this season. There have been a few games where we have done ok, and taken nothing for our efforts – with Fulham being one that immediately springs to mind. That said, in recent weeks we have taken a good point from a difficult game down at Southampton and given Manchester City, who are blowing a lot of teams away this year, a real run for their money at the Etihad Stadium. Hopefully we can get the three points on the board this weekend against Norwich.”

on the importance of registering back-to-back victories…

“It is only something we have done on one occasion this season, and I have been saying for a while now how important it is to get a couple of victories under your belt. That has been our Achilles heel this season to be perfectly honest , and we all accept that. But, we have seen decent signs in the last couple of away games to think that it is maybe changing now, and we are going to be more accomplished away from home. It is difficult in the Premier League because you know week in week out there is always going to be a huge test in terms of the opposition at the top, middle and bottom of the league. On the back of the Arsenal result it would be a shame if we couldn’t go and put in a good performance and pick up some points on our travels this weekend.”
