Swiss striker hoping reserve win can kick-start season

KARIM ROSSI netted the opener in the Reserves’ 2-1 triumph at Morecambe last night... and hopes the Elite Development Squad can carry any momentum forward to their match against Newcastle United on Monday.

The Swiss forward scored 20 minutes into the Central League Cup match at the Globe Arena, with the three points being cemented by a Michael Tonge screamer later in the half.

He hopes the victory can instil enough confidence for the Under-21s to get their first points of the season against the Magpies – a game that’s taking place at the Britannia Stadium.

“It’s a big game against Newcastle, we want to try and get the first win of the season in this new Under-21s league. It’s a really, really tough league,” said Rossi.

“It will be our second time at the Britannia Stadium after playing Brentford in the FA Youth Cup last year, so hopefully we can get the win.”

The 18-year-old was happy to play the whole game against Morecambe after featuring mainly off the bench in the early stages of the season so far.

“That was my first 90 minutes since we started the season, because I had some injuries and it was nice to play the full game and put in a good performance.”

The team was made up primarily of EDS first-year professionals, although five senior players, including Tonge and Wilson Palacios, made the trip to improve their match fitness.

Rossi says his team-mates reaped the benefits of playing alongside them.

“It was nice to play with the likes of Palacios, Diego Arismendi and Danny Higginbotham, you can learn a lot from them.”

On his own performance, Rossi added: “It’s quite tough playing up front on your own, but we tried to share the workload around with Tonge and the others.

“I think it was a good goal I got, but we should have scored more and won more comfortably.”

Ticket information for Monday night’s game will be announced soon on stokecityfc.com.
