MARK HUGHES has revealed that skipper Ryan Shawcross is facing a race against time to feature against former side Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The England international has been laid low with a bout of illness during the early part of the week, and was again absent from training on Thursday morning.
Hughes says that he will evaluate the condition of the defender again on Friday, but remains optimistic of having both Shawcross and Geoff Cameron available to him for the trip to Old Trafford.
“Ryan hasn’t trained this week through illness which hasn’t been ideal,” the Welshman said at Thursday afternoon’s pre-match press conference.
“We sent him home again this morning to give him an extra day, and hopefully he will turn back up tomorrow raring to get going again.
“At the moment I am confident that he will pull through in time to play, just as I am with regards to Geoff, who missed the game against West Brom last weekend.
“He has trained today with the lads, and hopefully he will come back in tomorrow having not suffered any reaction to the calf injury he picked up on international duty.”
