Skipper signs long-term contract at the Club

STOKE CITY are delighted to announce that captain Ryan Shawcross has signed a new five-and-a-half year contract with the Club.

The 25-year-old has committed his long-term future to the Potters following weeks of speculation, news that provides the Club with a huge boost as they enter the second half of the season.

Chief Executive Tony Scholes said: “We're delighted that Ryan has agreed this new deal.

"Contract negotiations can be complex and take a good deal of time, and over the last couple of months there has been plenty of speculation about Ryan’s future.

“However, the main thing was that both the Club and Ryan were always committed to getting this deal done.”

Manager Tony Pulis added: “It’s great news for this football Club that Ryan sees his future here.

“I think with him agreeing the contract, it sends out a message to everyone. We want to try and keep our best players.

“We had to make sure it was done properly and done right. It had to balance off both sides, but we’re really, really pleased.”

Shawcross himself said: “Obviously I’m delighted to sign the new contract. It took a long while to complete but I’m very pleased to commit my future to the Club.”

The central defender has played a pivotal role is helping establish City in the Premier League since signing permanently from Manchester United in January 2008.

“He’s been the bedrock of what we’ve been trying to do over the past five or six years and we’re really pleased that he’s finally agreed,” added Pulis.

“He’s grown with the football Club. In every step we’ve taken, he’s managed to cope with it and even get better, and he’s gone on to play for England too.”
