Defender forced to wait for England bow

RYAN SHAWCROSS will have to wait at least another four days to make his England debut . . . after he failed to come off the bench during England's comfortable victory against San Marino in Friday night's World Cup qualifier.

The 25-year-old defender, who was in the matchday squad for only the second time, missed out on a starting spot in the Group H clash at Wembley with boss Roy Hodgson preferring the more experienced partnership of Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill.

Shawcross was handed the number 15 shirt for the clash against the European minnows having been named amongst the substitutes, however, he failed to pick up his maiden cap with Hodgson opting to introduce Aaron Lennon, Jonjo Shelvey and Andy Carroll from the bench.

The emphatic victory was secured courtesy of a brace apiece for Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck, whilst Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, ironically the son of Stoke's last England international, Mark Chamberlain, added to the rout late on.

Stoke star Shawcross will now be hoping to feature in some capacity against Poland on Tuesday night.

ENGLAND: Hart; Walker, Jagielka, Cahill, Baines; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Carrick (Shelvey 66), Cleverley, Walcott (Lennon 10); Welbeck, Rooney (Carroll 73). Subs not used: Ruddy, Cole, Lescott, Shawcross, Milner, Johnson, Defoe, Forster.

Live Goal Updates:

ENGLAND 5 (Rooney 35 & 70, Welbeck 37 & 72, Oxlade-Chamberlain 77)
SAN MARINO 0

77: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain makes it five for England with a sublime finish from 12-yards. Alex is ironically the son of Stoke's last player to represent England, Mark. His cap came almost 28 years ago to the day.

73: Disappointment for Ryan Shawcross as Roy Hodgson makes his third and final change of the night. Andy Carroll comes on for Rooney.

72: Similarly to the first half, England grab a second in as many minutes with Welbeck hitting his second goal of the game to make it four!

70: Rooney whips home a third for England from 20-yards after Lennon tees him up.

37: 2-0! Welbeck makes it two with a clinically taken strike from 6-yards. Aaron Lennon pulls the ball back to the United youngster and he cleverly flicks the ball home.

35: 1-0 Rooney. The stand in skipper fires home from the penalty spot, after Danny Welbeck was tripped by the San Marino 'keeper.

Pre-Match Updates:

19:58 - The players have made their way on to the pitch, and Ryan Shawcross has taken his place upon the bench alongside the other players to be left out of the starting eleven. I will take a 1-0 win as long as it means Ryan makes his debut.

19:54 - The atmosphere is building now with 'Carnival De Paris' banging out of the PA system. The fans are expecting goals tonight, and to be honest so am I. I am going for a seven goal winning margin.

19:48 - Members of the Armed Forces just making their way across the field - they will be holding the flags of both nations prior to kick-off.

19:40 - There are one or two Stoke City flags scattered around the stadium here. It's a 90,000 sell out, so the atmosphere should be fantastic. Good to see a lot of younger supporters here too, cheering on their heroes.

19:30 - The players are out warming up on the field and Ryan Shawcross is out there amongst them. He has already looked around the stadium and waved to his family, who will be watching on proudly, along with every other Stoke City supporter in attendance.
