Shawcross thanks fans and praises supporters after winning Player of the Season

POTTERS captain Ryan Shawcross was delighted to pick up the Fans Player of the Season Award at last night's End of Season Awards dinner.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a successful campaign and his solid displays have not gone unnoticed by the Stoke faithful, who voted in their numbers to reward the skipper with the prestigious Club honour.

Shawcross was quick to thank teammates and City boss Mark Hughes after picking up the award for the first time during his seven years at the Britannia Stadium.

"It's brilliant for me and I'd like to thank all the fans for voting for me," he said to Stoke City Player.

"It's nice for Asmir [Begovic] not to win an award to be honest, because he seems to win every award going," he joked.

"I'm delighted to pick up the award, I've had a very good season, but credit for my performances also come down to the team because we have all had a fantastic season.

"Since the manager arrived, his style of play has given the squad a new impetus and most of the lads, including myself, have improved throughout the year and that has shown throughout this season."

The Potters equalled their best Premier League points tally in last weekend's victory over Fulham at the Britannia Stadium.

City have lost just three times in the Potteries and Shawcross was quick to thank the supporters for their part in the Club's magnificent home form this term.

"The supporters have been brilliant this year," he added.

"I think they have raised their game as much as the players have this season, they've created a superb atmosphere which has pushed us on to gain results.

"We want to reward them by finishing this season on a high and hopefully get a result in our final game."

Stoke City Chairman Peter Coates was on hand to deliver the Player of the Season Award to Shawcross and whilst doing so, sounded out his praises for the defenders magnificent season - in which he has missed just one Premier League game throughout the campaign.

Mr Coates also took time to express his opinion on the former Manchester United man gaining an England call-up in the future, but with the 2014 FIFA World Cup just under a month away, Shawcross believes he will have to wait a little while longer before adding to his solitary international appearance.

"I'd be surprised if I got a call-up now, it's a little late in the season and I'm pretty sure the squad will be set in stone.

"Of course, I want to break into the international set up; I still have time on my side and all I can do is carry on playing well for Stoke and hope that catches the eye in the future."
