Owen, Kightly and Sorensen do battle in Gino's Stoke Kitchen

THREE of Stoke City’s first team stars will be aiming to prove they are hot stuff in the kitchen when celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo puts their culinary skills to the test on Tuesday night.

The two Michaels – Owen and Kightly – will do battle with Thomas Sorensen in Gino’s Stoke Kitchen before almost 300 diners in the Tony Waddington Suite at the Britannia Stadium.

They will be endeavouring to follow in the footsteps of Rory Delap (2010) and Matthew Upson (2011) who were crowned City’s Master Chefs in the first two years of the competition.

Following the success of the previous events featuring Marco Pierre White, this year’s occasion will feature the Italian chef who shot to stardom when he won ‘I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here’ in 2009 and has been a hugely popular figure on television ever since that triumph.

Owen, Kightly and Sorensen will be challenged to prepare starters, main course and dessert in a special show kitchen which has been erected in the Waddington Suite for the occasion.

For England striker Owen, it is a chance to brush up on his domestic skills after admitting in a recent appearance on All Star Mr and Mrs that they were not his strong point.

“I can’t say I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, I am fortunate that my wife Louise does most of the cooking in our house,” commented the former Liverpool and Manchester United star.

“I am looking forward to the challenge though, and hopefully picking up a few tips along the way from Gino, but can’t do too well otherwise I’ll get asked to do the cooking at home.”

Owen will have to impress his international colleague Peter Crouch who, after taking part in last year’s event, has agreed to act as one of the judges on this particular occasion.

Wrights Food Group are the event sponsors of Gino’s Stoke Kitchen while the three players are being backed by KMF, Lister Trade Frames and DPS Tableware.
