Midfielder fills in at right back due to injuries

TONY PULIS was forced to employ Dean Whitehead as a stand-in right back in Stoke City’s starting line-up for their Premier League meeting with Swansea City.

With Andy Wilkinson ruled out with a back problem and Ryan Shotton nursing a hamstring injury, Pulis opted to include Whitehead in a defensive role at the Liberty Stadium.

That was one of a number of changes to the side that had overcome Crystal Palace in the FA Cup third round replay at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday evening as Asmir Begovic, Glenn Whelan and Charlie Adam all returned to the side for the game in South Wales.

Pulis preferred Peter Crouch to Kenwyne Jones in City’s attack, while Michael Owen was among the substitutes along with midfielder Wilson Palacios.

City: Begovic, Whitehead, Shawcross, Huth, Cameron, Walters, Whelan, Nzonzi, Adam, Etherington, Crouch. Subs: Sorensen, Palacios, Jones, Owen, Upson, Kightly Jerome.

Swansea: Vorm, Rangel, Monk, Williams, Davies, Routledge, Ki, De Guzman, Hernandez, Michu, Schecter. Subs: Tremmel, Bartley, Britton, Graham, Dyer, Lemah, Tiendalli

Referee: M. Dean
