Defender Alex Grant speaks ahead of today's game with Southampton

ALEX GRANT is determined to sign off the year with a win against Southampton this afternoon in the Barclays Under-21s Premier League.

The defender is doubly keen to secure the three points after going down 6-2 against Bolton Wanderers in their last league game, just over two weeks ago.

"I think Southampton will put a good side out," said Grant. "They've produced some quality players in the past and you can always expect them to put out a good team.

"We suffered a bad defeat to Bolton last week and were a bit disappointed with that. It was a bit of a blip because we've been feeling that we've done alright so far this season and picked up a few good results, including against Manchester United.

"Mistakes cost us against Bolton. We looked over the stats of the game afterwards and we outplayed them really."

Southampton go into the game in tenth position in the Premier League Under-21s table and are in good form with three wins in their last five league games.

The Potters meanwhile are looking for their first win since 2nd November and a victory would be an early Christmas present for Grant before he sets off to Australia to see his family, with their next match not coming until the New Year.

He said: "All the lads have been pretty confident over recent times so coming into the Southampton match, I think we’ll have to put our last performance behind us and crack on from where we left off before Bolton.

"I'm going home in a few weeks hopefully so it’ll be a good break for me."

This afternoon’s match against Southampton takes place at the Weaver Stadium in Nantwich, with kick-off at 2pm.
