Striker gives his backing to smoke alarm campaign

JONATHAN WALTERS has given his backing to the annual Push The Button campaign to encourage people to test their smoke alarms.

The Republic of Ireland international helped to promote the campaign this week ahead of the Barclays Premier League meeting with Sunderland at which Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service will be present at the Britannia Stadium.

The Service’s Push The Button campaign, which is now in its third year, urges people to test their smoke alarms to ensure they are in working order, with statistics showing that seven out of ten people fail to carry out regular checks.

Firefighters will be at the match handing out Push The Button freebies while the campaign video will be played to those attending the game.

City’s Head of Community Adrian Hurst said: “We feel it is important to give our backing to such a crucial safety message for people in their homes.

“We are in the privileged position of being able to engage with more than 27,000 people who attend each of our home matches, but also millions more who watch our matches on television, so we can help in getting this message across loud and clear.

“Checking a smoke alarm regularly is something that can be easily overlooked, so hopefully we can help in people becoming more vigilant.”

Station Manager Dave Steele said: “The game on Saturday will be a great opportunity for us to get our Push The Button message out to a massive audience and we’re delighted that Stoke City are supporting this campaign.”
