Development Squad midfielder Charlie Ward was pleased with the side’s 4-0 victory over Congleton Town on Tuesday evening.

The promising youngster made an impressive appearance from the bench against the non-league outfit and says that it was good for the team to get another win under their belt during pre-season following last weekend’s 3-1 win against Newcastle Town.

“It was a good game and I think we played well,” he told stokecityfc.com following the friendly in Cheshire.

“Improving your fitness is the main aim of pre-season but it’s always good to win because nobody likes losing.”

The 19-year-old also spoke about the honour of playing alongside an experienced pro in Cameron Jerome, believing it can only help him improve as a young professional.

“He is a senior pro and you always strive to get where they are,” said Ward.

“It’s always good to listen to him and he is a nice lad - there isn’t a front on him even though he has achieved so much in football.”

Ward is now focusing on forcing his way into City’s first team squad but knows how difficult it will be to catch the eye of Mark Hughes with such strength in midfield.

He added: “Breaking into any first team is hard but especially a team as strong as ours. There are many good players in my position such as Steven Nzonzi, Charlie Adam, Glenn Whelan and now the experience of Steve Sidwell.

“All I can do is keep playing well and trying to catch the gaffer’s eye when given the chance to train with them.

“It’s also important that I listen to the experience of Glyn Hodges who has played the game also. You must keep your head up without being negative, even when things aren’t going well.”
