Potters star gives thumbs up to Club's community scheme...

ST TERESA’S Catholic Primary School welcomed a special guest on Thursday afternoon as Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan popped by to hand out City 7s membership packs.

The midfielder, who has been in fine form for the Potters this season, spent time meeting young Potters fans at the school based in Trent Vale as he presented them with their packs as well as posing for photographs and signing autographs.

The youngsters received a replica home shirt, free tickets for a Premier League game at the Britannia Stadium and a £5 voucher to open or add to a Stoke City Junior Save and Support account.

Whelan’s visit was made possible thanks to a sponsorship deal involving local business Tollgate Hotel and Leisure.

“It’s very important to visit schools in the community,” the 30-year-old told during his visit.

“Since I have been at the club it’s something that they have done really well. It’s nice to come here and see the children, especially this school as it is so close to both the stadium and the training ground.

“These schemes are very important, not only to get them interested in Stoke City and coming to the games but also interested in sport generally so they can participate in activities themselves.

“It’s great to see so many children around the city wearing Stoke shirts and with the team doing so well at the moment, the area is buzzing with excitement.”

He added: “Hopefully me being here today might inspire some of the children to take up sport, not necessarily football, but any sport.

“We didn’t have any professional sportsmen or women visit my school when I was younger, but I am sure if then had of done it might of inspired more youngsters to take up sport.”
