DEAN WHITEHEAD insists that Stoke City can draw positives from the start they have made to the season . . . despite having won just one of their opening nine Barclays Premier League fixtures.
The goalless draw with Sunderland at the weekend proved to be City’s sixth stalemate of the campaign, having already held the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool to draws.
Whilst acknowledging that he and his teammates are disappointed not to have accumulated more points, Whitehead feels the players can take satisfaction from the start they have made.
“I think we have done really well considering the teams we have come up against,” the 30-year-old former Sunderland midfielder told Stoke City Player. “We have played five of the top six now and performed well against them all.
“We’ve had six draws in nine games, but I think four of them have been against top sides, so we will look at them as good results.
“Obviously, we are disappointed not to have taken the three points on Saturday, and we were unfortunate at Reading on the opening day, so we should have a few more points on the board.
“We have to be positive with how we have fared though, because, like I say, we have done well. We want to build upon that though and go on a run of games now where we can try and pick up more victories.”
Whitehead started his second successive game against his former Club in the absence of the injured Glenn Whelan, and he feels aggrieved not to have helped the Potters to a second home victory.
“It was a tight game on Saturday; Sunderland are a strong side, just like us, and were very organised, but I think we deserved to score the goal in the second half and win the game,” he added.
“We had them penned in for the last 15 minutes or so, but it wouldn’t drop for us in the box. It is frustrating, but we will work hard on the training ground this week and make sure we are ready to try and win the game at Norwich on Saturday.”
