Defender hoping to play against his former side...

MARC WILSON admits he is hoping to retain his spot in the starting eleven for Wednesday evening’s Capital One Cup clash against League Two outfit Portsmouth.

The Republic of Ireland international has featured in each of the Potters’ two Barclays Premier League encounter thus far, and says he would love to maintain his spot at the heart of defence against his former side tomorrow.

The 27-year old enjoyed three years at Fratton Park at the start of his career, and even featured in the side that reached the FA Cup Final in 2010, before making the move to the Potteries later that year.

“I don’t know how many of the lads are left that I was there with, but it is still a great club and I am looking forward to coming up against them again,” the defender told Stoke City Player in the build-up to the game.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and of course, I wish them all of the best for the season, with the exception of Wednesday evening.

“They are a really good club, they have a tremendous following too and it is such a shame that they are in the position that they are at the moment.

“I have some great memories of my time there, but I am sure they will be back in the future. They are too good a club not to bounce back.”

He added: “It will be the first time that I have come up against them since I left, but I am only concentrating on helping us to record the result we want. That’s the most important thing for us.”
