Under-19s all set for Switzerland competition...

ACADEMY DIRECTOR Dave Wright says he is excited at the opportunity of taking a group of Under-19s to Switzerland and competing in a prestigious tournament later this week.

Alongside Elite Development Squad head coach Glyn Hodges, the pair will take charge of the team during the two day U-19 Altstatten competition which takes place on Friday and Saturday.

Wright admits the chance to play on the continent was too good an opportunity to turn down after receiving good reviews about the tournament

“We are very much looking forward to it,” he revealed to stokecityfc.com.

“Although it has been a long season for the boys we felt we still wanted to take the experience because these sorts of opportunities are not always easy to come by.

“We’ve been exploring as many opportunities as we can to allow our different age groups to experience international football and this one in particularly was kindly brought to our attention by the Academy Director at Fulham.

“They couldn’t honour their invitation this year so we were more than willing to take their place and hopefully we can perform well throughout the competition.”

He added: “It’s a prestigious tournament with good pedigree so we will be proud to represent the Club out in Switzerland.”

Wright revealed that the strongest possible squad has been selected and the intention is to follow in the footsteps of the Under-17s who were crowned Generation Adidas Cup champions earlier this year in America.

“We had a strong pool to pick from, which we have done, but obviously with Curtis Strong being called up to represent Wales at Under-19 level we’ve brought in Johnville Renee-Pringle, who is a first-year scholar so it should be a great experience for him, just like for the rest of the lads.

“We are certainly going there with the intention of trying to win the competition and are hopeful with the squad we will be taking that we can perform well and bring back another trophy for the Club.”

Stoke City will have exclusive coverage of the tournament on Twitter @stokecity , Instagram @stokecity and at The Wall on stokecityfc.com
