Two years after the arrival, Villa Park hosted its first ever England international with the venue going on to welcome the nation's senior side a further 15 times in total.
It hosted three games at the 1966 World Cup, four for Euro '96 and the last ever UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final in 1999, whilst it also played host to the FA Community Shield as recently as 2012, with Wembley Stadium being used for the Olympic Games.
Over the years there has of course been various stages of renovation and reconstruction, resulting in a present day capacity of 42,682.
Modern day Villa Park comprises of four stands; the Holte End, one of Europe's largest behind-the-goal stands, the North Stand which is opposite, the Doug Ellis Stand, formerly known as the Witton Lane Stand and the main Trinity Road Stand.
From the Britannia Stadium, take the M6 Southbound from the A500.
With major roadworks around Junction 6 of the M6, Aston Villa recommend supporters exit for Villa Park further north at Junction 7.
At Junction 7, join the A34 (Walsall Road), following signs for Birmingham.
Turn right at the traffic lights onto the A453, to join the road that runs parallel to the A34, with Birmingham University on the left.
Take a left at the roundabout onto Aston Lane and follow it beyond Tesco to another roundabout.
Villa Park is across this roundabout on the right hand side.
There are a number of traffic exclusion zones and parking restrictions around the streets of Villa Park, but there are several matchday car parks available to use.
Supporters can park at the either Perry Barr Greyhound Station on Aldridge Road upon exit of the A34 (post code B42 2ET), Birmingham University on Franchise Street off Aston Lane on the left hand side (post code B42 2SU) or at Broadway School on the right hand side halfway down Aston Lane (post code B20 3DP).
Villa Park is a ten to fifteen minute walk and using these car parks will ensure you access the motorway quickly after the match.
Any coaches, excluding mini buses, are able to park for free in the Aston Villa coach park.
Ay coach wishing to park there must arrive at least 75 minutes prior to kick-off.
