Irish Duo Glenn Whelan & Marc Wilson Play In Costa Rica Draw

CITY DUO Glenn Whelan and Marc Wilson both started for the Republic of Ireland as they draw 1-1 with England's World Cup Group D opponents Costa Rica on Friday.

Whelan played the full ninety minutes in the stalemate in Philadelphia, whilst Wilson was withdrawn just prior to half-time as a precaution after the defender felt his hamstring tighten.

Wilson had earlier set-up the Republic's goal when his cross from the left was put away by Kevin Doyle.

Doyle then suffered an elbow to the head that saw Giancarlo Gonzalez sent off, but the Central Americans still managed to get an equaliser, from the penalty spot, from Celso Borges.

Robbie Keane saw his kick from 12-yards at the other end saved in what was Martin O'Neill third international friendly of the last couple of weeks.

Their final task before the summer break is to attempt to thwart Ballon D'or winner Ronaldo and co as Portugal lie in wait in New Jersey on Tuesday.

Jonathan Walters, who missed Friday's game with a stomach bug, could return but Whelan won't feature after returning home following a family illness.
