Ladies Team Prepare For New League

IT'S NOT ONLY been the boys who've been preparing for the new 2013/14 season over the last few weeks.

Stoke City's treble-winning Ladies team have also been stepping up their pre-season with a series of games ahead of their debut in the FA Women's Premier League Northern Division.

And the collection of silverware as already continued as well, with both the first team and reserve teams scooping trophies at the recently held Keele Cup.

The first team topped their group following 2-0 victories over both Crewe Alexandra and Huddersfield Town, along with a 2-2 draw with Curzon Ashton.

From there they defeated Scottish Premier League side Kilwinning 5-0 before getting the better of old adversaries Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final; Laura Garside and Jade Boulton on target in the 2-1 win.

Further friendly matches against Crewe and Yeovil Town both produced positive scorelines with Alex defeated 4-2 and Women's Super League outfit Yeovil edged out 4-3.

Tuesday evening did see the first defeat of pre-season but the 2-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion's Sporting Club Albion team did see a new signing score on her debut.

Striker Hannah Keryakoplis has signed for the Potters from Women's Super League side Liverpool and will strengthen a squad that scooped the league title along with the league cup and Staffordshire Cup last term.

"We have added real quality to the squad for this year," joint-manager Andrew Frost told stokecityfc.com

"A few players have come up from our Centre of Excellence to sign whilst we have also got three of four more girls that have come in from elsewhere.

"It is important this year to have strength in depth in the new league and that is what we have now.

"New players ensure that there is that competition for places, something that every team needs, whilst we've also added to the non-playing side of things as well."

There are still a host of further friendlies to be played, starting at Cambridge this weekend, before the opening game of the season, away to Newcastle United, on Sunday 25th August.

They then host Preston North End at Stone Dominoes FC on Sunday 1st September (kick off 2.00pm).

"It's exciting times for all involved with the Ladies set-up," Frost added.

"I feel we should be challenging for the top half of the league this season but it'll be tough as there is some real good, strong opposition."
