TONY PULIS handed Michael Owen his first competitive start for the Club against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Third Round on Saturday.

The former England hit-man was included in the starting line-up for the first time, having appeared just four times off the bench during his initial four months at the Britannia Stadium.

Owen partnered Peter Crouch in attack, in front of a four man midfield which consisted of Jonathan Walters, Steven Nzonzi, Dean Whitehead and Matthew Etherington.

Ryan Shawcross skippered the side for the first time since penning a new long term deal with the Club, and the rest of the backline was made up of Ryan Shotton, Robert Huth and United States international Geoff Cameron.

Asmir Begovic was rested for the clash meaning Thomas Sorensen came in to the team to make only his second start of the campaign.

Stoke City: Sorensen; Shotton, Shawcross (c), Huth, Cameron; Kightly, Nzonzi, Whitehead, Walters; Crouch, Owen. Subs: Nash, Upson, Wilkinson, Adam, Etherington, Jerome, Jones.
