Stadium Expansion Approval

STOKE CITY have been granted planning approval subject to conditions for their proposed expansion of the Britannia Stadium at some point in the future.

The Club's application to 'fill-in' the south east corner of the stadium with an additional 1,800 seats has been unanimously agreed by Stoke-on-Trent City Council and means they can continue looking into the feasibility of such a development.

Though City are now in a position to increase the stadium's capacity to 30,000, no decision has yet been made on a start date for this work.

Richard Smith, Managing Director of Stoke City Property Ltd, commented: "This is great news that we now have planning permission for the expansion.

"We will continue therefore to work on an implementation plan to undertake this work at a point in the future when it is considered appropriate to do so."

The proposed expansion would 'fill-in' the gap between the Seddon Stand and the Marston's Pedigree Stand which currently accommodates the giant video screen, thus completing the sweep round of the stadium bowl on three sides.

As well as the 1,800 additonal seats, the south east corner would also feature a high level viewing platform with lift access for disabled supporters, while the concourse would accommodate catering and washroom facilities.

The expansion work would also mean that the giant video screen will have to be relocated from its present position to the north west corner of the stadium above a new media facility incorporating a television studio.
