The Italian Job

STOKE CITY have confirmed that they will face Serie A side Genoa in their final game of the build-up to the 2013-14 campaign.

Mark Hughes will take charge of his first game at the Britannia Stadium when City face the Italian club on Saturday 10th August.

It will be the first time for four years that City have staged a high-profile game at home in the countdown to a new season and takes place seven days before they kick off their Barclays Premier League campaign at Liverpool.

The Club have also confirmed they are to face Wrexham, Hughes' home town club, in a friendly at the Racecourse Ground on Sunday 4th August - just three days after they return from their tour of the United States.

Genoa, nine times winners of Serie A and the first-ever winners of that title, will provide a good test for the Potters at the end of a pre-season programme that also features a nine-day trip to the United States to play three matches.

Hughes is now putting the final touches to his pre-season schedule with the players starting those preparations in two weeks time.

"We were approached by a number of European clubs about the possibility of playing at the Britannia Stadium once we made it clear we would be staging a pre-season game at home and Mark Hughes felt that Genoa would provide the right test at this stage of our build-up," explained City's Chief Executive Tony Scholes.

"Genoa's illustrious history makes them one of the top clubs in Italy and I am sure our supporters will be excited at the prospect of such attractive opposition being lined up for our first pre-season match here since 2009."

He added: "We shall be finalising the arrangements for the remainder of our pre-season build-up within the next few days."

The game at the Britannia Stadium will have a 3.00pm kick-off on Saturday 10th August and the Club will confirm ticket prices shortly.
