Under-21s Edge Closer

STOKE CITY'S Under-21 squad wrapped up their pre-season preparations with another win last night ahead of the forthcoming 2013/14 season.

A 2-0 triumph over Stafford Rangers at Marston Road made it back-to-back victories thanks to strikes from Derice Richards and Adam Thomas.

This followed on from Saturday's 2-1 win at Macclesfield Town where Charlie Ward and James Alabi were both on the scoresheet.

Glyn Hodges' squad have enjoyed a total of five victories overall since they returned at the start of July and now ready themselves for their opening game of the season, away at Norwich City, next Monday (kick off 2.00pm).

The Under-18s, meanwhile, have a little bit longer to wait until their opener at Fulham on Saturday 17th August.

They beat Norwegian outfit IL Hodd 3-0 at Clayton Wood yesterday, with Charles-Anthony Weston-Hayles scoring two and also claiming the third, though it could have been deemed an own goal by the referee.

That also made it two wins in two after a 4-0 beating of Wrexham at the weekend; Nathan Ricketts-Hopkinson bagging a brace with others from Richards and Yusuf Coban.

Millwall are the final opposition for John Perkins' squad on Saturday, with a 12 noon kick off at Clayton Wood.

* Saturday's Under-21s friendly with Newcastle Town has been cancelled, whilst the opening home league game against Arsenal has moved from Sunday 18th to Monday 19th August (kick off 7.00pm).
