Coventry City 2 Stoke City 3
City's Under 18s secured their passage into the 4th round of the FA Youth Cup last night after a stunning late, late strike from Louis Moult secured a 3-2 extra time win at the Ricoh Arena.
The first half saw little created as the sides cancelled each other out but it was the Potters who had the first shot on goal as Moult put Vickers through.
It didn't look like the young winger was going to reach the pass but he just managed to poke it past the sliding keeper before pulling it back to Alexander. The hitman struck his effort first time but saw it blocked on the line and cleared away.
The hosts first opportunity took its time in arriving, but in the 37th minute it arrived, and ended up in the back of the net as the hosts winger Cain cross was dropped by Harrison after a strong challenge from Jeffers and the loose ball fell to Ogleby, who side stepped a challenge and placed the ball into the empty net.
The Potters came out all guns blazing at the start of the second half and, in a show of intent, Connor blazed just over from 30 yards, after being teed up by Urwin.
Urwin had an effort of his own two minutes later as he twisted and turned on the edge of the box before curling his effort inches over the bar.
Alexander was finding his range and after Moult found him inside the area he turned his marker and unleashed a powerful effort from 15 yards that the keeper did well to hold onto.
Stoke defence had to be on their toes moments later as a good cross from Cain was headed out for a corner by Diao, with Blackwell lurking behind him for the hosts, and then Page had to produce a diving header to clear the ball from inside the 6-yard box with two Coventry players waiting to pounce.
The Potters were quickly back in attacking mode and Nicholls won the ball in midfield before picking out Alexander who drove a fantastic effort in on goal from 25 yards, forcing the keeper into a superb diving save.
Nicholls and Alexander combined againshortly after as the former rolled the ball to the latter following a scramble in the area, but the latter's effort was blocked by Wynter in the home defence.
The Potters dominance eventually paid dividends in the 76th minute as Urwin and Diao combined on the right before Dutchman Diao got to the by line and whipped in a great cross that was bundled over the line by Warwick Alexander from 5 yards.
Coventry nearly stole the tie with 5 minutes left as a great cross by Hollist picked out Cameron with a free header but he could only cushion it wide of the near post.
The first period of extra time saw just one chance for each team as Urwin blazed over for the Potters before the hosts yet again took the lead when, in injury time, a low Ogelnby cross was turned into the net by Jeffers from 3 yards.
The second period saw the Potters take the game to Coventry and nearly paid for their attacking outlook in the 109th minute when Blackwell produced some fancy stopovers before curling a shot towards the top corner, only a fine save from Harrison preventing the winger wrapping up the tie.
Stoke were still well in it though and two minutes later Urwin danced past Hollist on the edge of the box before knocking the ball to substitute Stockhall. The midfielders shot was deflected up and fell to Urwin. He controlled the ball and rifled it into the roof of the net from 12 yards to send the travelling faithful wild. The players passion shone through in their celebrations, especially recently subbed Warwick Alexander, who sprinted from the bench to the 6 yard box to join in the celebrations, an act the ref thought was enough to warrant a booking.
The game looked to be heading into penalties but with 20 seconds of injury time remaining Louis Moult scored the crucial third goal for the Potters. Moult collected a throw in on the by line and, in the mould of another City striker who wears 10 on his back, flicked it over one defender's head dribbled down the line, dropped the shoulder to beat another before coming inside and smashing his shot on goal. The ball struck the leg of a defender making a desperate last ditch tackle and looped up into the top corner.
The Potters celebrations were wilder than any seen previous and they composed themselves to see out the remaining seconds from the restart to secure their passage against a side who were much fancied to go a long way in this competition.
