Stoke City 2 Sheffield United 1
City extended their unbeaten start to the season to four games as they defeated another well respected academy.
Striker Louis Moult grabbed a goal in each half to give the Potters a lead that was never threatened until the visitors pulled a goal back in the last minute of injury time.
The Potters didn't produce the same level of performance as last weeks against Derby, but were far more clinical in front of goal to earn the three points.
That clinical finishing was on show after just fifty seconds as the hosts took the lead. Moult carried the ball forward before cleverly switching the ball from left to right where Urwin was open in space.
The tricky winger ran at his full back forcing him back and allowing Mitchell the space to overlap. Urwin slid the ball to the dynamic midfielder who got to the byline before pulling the ball back to Moult, who timed his run perfectly, and the in form striker sidefooted into the net.
The hosts looked comfortable without really threatening a second as they controlled the tempo of the game early on. The only danger they were faced with was in the 8th minute asfree kick was whipped in from the right and. after being half cleared with a confident punch by keeper David Parton, the ball was headed back into the danger area but Parton was there aagin to claim the high ball and wipe out any danger.
The Potters neat passing nearly produced the goods in the twenty first minute as Urwin was freed in the final third, He brushed off the despairing defender but was thwarted by the keeper, who slid at his feet and managed to divert the pacey stars shot wide of the post.
The Blades keeper was called into action three minutes later as, with the hosts outnumbering their opponents in a quick breakaway Urwin found the unmarked Moult. He nipped inside onto his right foot, but his effort, from the corner of the area, was well held by the keeper.
Parton enhanced his growing reputation ten minutes before half time when he showed bravery and awareness to produce a double save following hesitant defending from Craig Sinclair. The full back, son of former Potters keeper Ronnie, was caught in two minds as the ball came over the top and allowed two striker to nip past him.
Parton bravely spread himself at the feet of the first attacker to divert the ball away before scampering to his feet and smothering the ball as the second attacker looked to tap it into the empty net. It was a fantastic piece of goalkeeping from the highly rated stopper and recieved applause from those in attendance.
City played out the half and went desperately close to taking a two goal cushion into the break as, with moments left in the first forty five, Alexander flicked on a long free kick. Nicholls burst forward into the area and collected the ball before rifling a shot across goal. The ball beat the keeper but flicked the post to deny the midfielder a third goal in as many games, he second half started with the Potters on the front foot again.
Rodney McDonald, who marshalled the defence fantastically all game, went on one of his forward runs, taking the ball from his own area to well inside the Blades half before attempting to slide a ball through to Urwin.
The outstretched boot of a defender toe poked the ball away but McDonald had carried on coming forward and picked up the ball before using his pace to breeze past the last defender.
He was now on the left hand side of the penalty area and the cultured defender looked up and sent a dangerous cross towards Alexander and Moult. With the Potters pair lined up a great recovery header from a defender cleared the danger away.
City, and in particularly Moult, were not to be denied though and when Mitchell rolled the ball into the striker feet twenty yards out he had his back to goal and nothing seemed on. He then shimmied away from goal before twisting the other way, giving himself enough room to spin and curl a shot just inside the angle of bar and post to add another magic goal to his ever growing collection.
The hitman is bang in form and he seems to have pushed his game on even further since his debut for the first team a couple of weeks ago.
Chances were few and far between but the Potters looked comfortable and never in danger of allowing the Blades back into the game and nearly added a third in the 71st minute as Alexander freed Moult down the left. Moult, on a hat trick, whipped in a knee high cross that was shanked high into the air by the near post defender. Urwin raced in at the back post to try and nod home but the ball just evaded his jump.
The Etruria-born star was given another chance minutes later when Moult beat two men in a quick break before switching the ball to Urwin. He controlled the ball and then knocked it round the defender but drilled his 25 yards shot wide of the near post.
City introduced Harrison and Vickers for Moult and Alexander late on to run down the clock but saw the clean sheet vanish in injury time. Matt Cohen conceded a free kick 22 yards out for a push as he headed away a high ball and the visitors duly curled the ball around the wall and in off the inside of the post leaving Parton with no chance.
CITY: Parton; Sinclair, Foster, Cohen, McDonald; Connor, Nicholls, Mitchell; Urwin, Moult (Harrison 80), Alexander (Vickers 85).
