STOKE CITY'S Under-18s produced a spirited and committed display to see off local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers . . . as substitute Adam Vickers popped up with an injury-time winner after goalkeeper Dave Parton had earlier saved a penalty.
Vickers burst through in the 93rd minute to score from close range to give the young Potters a victory that had seemed unlikely for long periods of the game.
City had fielded a young side, while Wolves clearly possessed the more experienced line-up, one which included first teamer Nathaniel Mendez Laing.
Chances fell to either side throughout the game, but Wolves had an excellent chance to go in front in the 78th minute from the penalty spot after Parton had brought down an opposing striker in the box, only to then pull off an excellent save.
Vickers looked lively after coming on to replace former Manchester United winger Mendez in the closing stages of the first half and he went close with a spectacular long range shot from the right wing which the Wolves 'keeper tipped over the bar.
But he wasn't to be denied in the closing stages as he latched onto a pass from Jackson before rolling his shot past the Wolves 'keeper from eight yards.
CITY: Parton, Hedley, McDonald, Cohen, Foster, Gomez (Vickers), Clarke, Mitchell, Jackson, Harrison (Stockhall), Alexander (Connor).
