A Fantastic Opportunity - Rawlins

Posted on: Sat 10 Oct 2009

Phil Rawlins will be wearing two hats when Stoke City entertain their sister club the Austin Aztex for a friendly at Nantwich Town's Weaver Stadium on Wednesday evening.

As well as being a director of the Potters, he will be the proud President of the first USL-1 team to embark upon a tour of England with the opening match of that 10-day visit.

The Aztex are still very much in their infancy, having been formed two years ago, so this tour and the chance to play against Premier League opposition is part of the learning experience.

And for City, it will be a chance to gauge the progress of a club which is now affiliated to them and is viewed as a 'gateway' to developing talent in that particular part of the world.

Therefore, Rawlins will look at it from both perspectives when the young and inexperienced Aztex squad takes on their more illustrious opponents at the Nantwich Town ground.

As well as playing that match, the Aztex will train with City at the Clayton Wood Training Ground either side of that fixture and will also watch the Potters take on West Ham United.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the Aztex players and for many of them this is the trip of a lifetime," said Rawlins.

"Many of them have never even been to England, let alone been exposed to the English game which they have seen and heard so much about.

"They will be able to experience football in a different environment, play against some top Premier League players and also have the opportunity to benefit from their training methods."

He added: "We hope in the long run that this will be the first of regular visits to England which will certainly boost the development of the squad and raise the profile of the Aztex.

"It will also be good from Stoke City's point of view to take a look at how things are developing with Aztex as we look to develop that relationship for the long term future."

The match kicks off at 7.00pm at the Weaver Stadium and tickets are currently on sale from the Britannia Stadium Ticket Office priced at £5.00 for adults and £1.00 for concessions. For further details, please contact 0871 663 2007.
